As technology continues to advance, many people are curious about the applications of artificial intelligence in society. From using Internet of Things (IoT) devices in our homes to predicting cancer outcomes and developing treatment plans, the possibilities for artificial intelligence (AI) are endless. However, researchers and companies alike are realizing the potential that AI has for social good.

Google recently launched its AI Impact Challenge, which encouraged “organizations around the world to submit their ideas for how they could use AI to address societal challenges.” Google distributed $25 million in grants at their I/O Conference in early May 2019, challenging companies to explore how AI can be used creatively for the betterment of humanity.

The competition received applications from 119 countries with various social good-related causes. The 20 winner’s topics ranged widely, spanning from an intelligent texting system that uses natural language to connect at-risk youth with emergency counselors, to systems designed to analyze, report, and stop illegal logging activity and environmental hazards in the rainforests of South America.

EPICS in IEEE encourages advancing technology for the benefit of humanity and strives to provide as many opportunities as possible for students that are ready to make the world a better place through engineering. As artificial intelligence continues to captivate the technological world stage, it’s exciting to imagine the endless possibilities (and EPICS projects!) just around the corner.
