The Madras Section of the Sri Sai Ram Engineering College Student Branch, working with the Dr. V.S. Natarajan Geriatric Foundation, has created a smart fall detection system to ensure the safety of people with disabilities.

This device is in the form of floor tiles that have sensors to be laid on restroom floors. The tiles can sense when someone has fallen by calculating the impact and area covered. This project is designed for a 96-square-foot room, with focus on the proper laying of the tiles to ensure easy access should they need repairs.

The tiles are fitted with sensors covered with Teflon sheets to protect them. The tiles are interlocking for easy access to the sensors. When the sensors feel that someone has fallen, an immediate alarm system is activated to notify relatives or caretakers.

This project has been supplied with a grant of $1,300.00 as part of the EPICS in IEEE’s Access and Abilities Competition.
