Sudden falls in elderly folks are a prevalent issue that can cause long-term and life-threatening injuries that require the constant attention of caregivers.
The IEEE Islamabad Joint Chapter, in collaboration with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), created a detection system that uses radio waves to detect falls to ensure quick response on the part of caregivers. The radio waves detect the placement of objects around the room and can track falls with motion sensing.
The idea behind using frequency also allows the system to work in the dark, unlike cameras, and protects privacy, meaning the device can be used in more private spaces. The alarm system attached will alert staff if someone has fallen.
The team behind this project will train the nurses and support staff on how to operate the fall detection system, and the team will be able to assist the staff when needed. The lifespan of this system is expected to be between four and five years. The electronic waste will be recycled.
This project was given a grant of $5,400 as part of EPICS at IEEE’s Access and Abilities Competition.
