Last March, students from the Epsilon Xi Chapter of IEEE eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN) at Wichita State University in Kansas aimed to build 17 customized and battery-powered ride-on cars for local children with special needs.
EPICS in IEEE provided students with a $10,000 grant, which went toward engineering and development of the cars. The students partnered with Rainbows United, a non-profit in Wichita that helps children with disabilities – to distribute the cars. The cars provide children with disabilities independent mobility that positively impacts their developmental stages – especially at a younger age. Feedback for the project has been incredibly positive, especially from parents.
EPICS in IEEE is funded by donations to the IEEE Foundation, the organization’s philanthropic arm. The program has awarded nearly $525,000 in grants to more than 100 projects to date.
