In Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu, India, students blended technologies to empower people with hearing disabilities to have “casual” conversations with those who can hear.

The IEEE Student Branch at the National Engineering College in Kovilpatti is used their EPICS grant to develop “CasTalk,” an app with an animated video streamer and cloud access that translates phrases in regional Indian sign language into spoken Tamil and English, and vice versa. The app allows for simple, natural communication between hearing and non-hearing communities in Southern India, and ultimately will enable people with hearing differences to communicate more freely with their community and beyond.
