PROJECT LAUNCHED: 2014
PROJECT LEADS:
- Shri Vishnu Engineering College for Women
- Vishnu Public School
PROJECT OVERVIEW & UPDATES
The main objective of this project is to provide assistance for hearing impaired people by developing a method of detecting various sounds and alerting the person within his or her living space or home. The project developers of this EPICS project will provide a wrist band consisting of a vibrator with sound detector sensors. When a sound is detected, it will set off the vibrator function, which can alert the person.
Based on the frequencies of various devices and the intensity of vibrator changes, the wearer can identify the source of sound. Adjusting the intensity of vibrator low for calling bell and high for telephone ring, the person can then come to know whether the sound is from a calling bell or from telephone. Similarly, for human voices, the device can be adjusted to match that voice’s sound intensity, helping the hearing challenged to live more easily and comfortably.
Prototypes of the learning aids have so far been developed and a version of the learning prototype was donated to deaf students of Sri Venkateswara School for the Deaf at Bhimavaram. University students from Shri Vishnu Engineering College for Women, Bhimavaram, will collaborate with students from Vishnu Public School on the project.
The university students will help the high school students to learn the various features of the sound sensors and the microcontrollers used in the wrist band. The high school students will be taught the principle behind making the project, and will be involved in every step of recreating the project.
