The IEEE Universidad del Valle Student Branch is working on a project to build a water drinking trough, using a water condensation system that takes advantage of the environment’s humidity. Renewable energy from a solar panel and a wind generator will be used, integrated with a Wi-Fi communication system for monitoring and a bird recognition system, to create a database of the species in the region.
The project is aimed at preserving biodiversity by generating water in an alternative way using the humidity present in the air. The project consists of an electromechanical device that captures the water present in the humidity of the atmosphere by disposing of the condensed water in a birdbath through a drip system. Renewable solar and wind energy sources will supply the system; with this, it is expected to evaluate the energy efficiency of both sources for the condenser and have sufficient information for subsequent models and improvements.
The project team is working with Fundación Farallones as their community partner. Fundación Farallones’ mission is “To conserve and restore the forest cover of the hydrographic basins of the Pance River, Yotoco River (municipalities of Cali and Yotoco, Valle del Cauca Department) and Valle River (municipality of Bahía Solano, Chocó Department), through research, education, training of environmental leaders, and community development.”
This project was made possible by $5,840 in funding from the Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS), an EPICS in IEEE partner.
