The Institución Educativa Los Garzones (INSTEGAR), hosts a 2,200 m2 agroecological garden utilized as a socio-pedagogical laboratory for knowledge management, conservation of natural resources, innovation, and entrepreneurship activities. The garden’s objective is to integrate agroecology, art, and culture to promote environmental sustainability awareness.

The surrounding community, characterized by low-income households primarily engaged in agriculture and other primary sector activities, faces limited infrastructure and service conditions, impacting the development of small businesses and contributing to low-security levels. The garden encounters challenges in coordinating various stakeholders and entities to involve them in student training processes and to foster environmental culture, ownership, and sustainability within the educational community.

The project entails the design and implementation of a system for water storage, automated irrigation, and waste management for the Matoruco agroecological garden at the Institución Educativa Los Garzones. Additionally, it aims to deepen the community’s sense of ownership, increase access frequency, and invigorate participation in preservation and resource management activities in this space and the community.

This project was made possible by $7,950.00 in funding from the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), an EPICS in IEEE partner.
