PROJECT OVERVIEW & UPDATES

In Orange County, south of Los Angeles, a team of eight undergraduate students is developing STEMbility, a web series that turns its participants into learners – and inspires viewers with innovative STEM projects that have real-world applications. The students, from the University of California at Irvine, Orange Coast College, Irvine Colleges, and others are developing a series of free educational videos for middle school, high school, and college students.

Sponsored by the IEEE Orange County Section and its Computer Society, the project uses actual engineering students who work in teams over three months to create, develop, execute and complete their project. Each team’s progress is videotaped as they describe their experiences to the audience. With an EPICS in IEEE grant of $4,900, the group purchased the equipment needed to create a video production lab. It is housed in the Orange County facility of LisoAmerica, a non-profit devoted to accelerating Latino STEM readiness for success in the workplace (“Listo” means “ready” in Spanish.) The videos will be distributed to middle and high schools in OC affiliated with ListoAmerica, as well as OC college and university classes.
