The effects of climate change have been felt deeply by the citizens of Pakistan, though measures have not been taken on a larger scale to protect environmental health.

A team of students from the IEEE Karachi Section from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology in Jamshoro, Pakistan have collaborated with Climate Action Pakistan to create a pollution monitoring system to provide data to policymakers for a lower cost than other methods on the market. This project is entitled CAPTURE-Citywide Assessment and Pollution Tracking
for Urban Resilience and Environment.

To accomplish this, four air pollution/quality nodes are deployed in various selected locations determined in conjunction with the NGO. These sensors will monitor nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and ozone to assess air pollution.

To monitor water quality, the team will use water quality monitoring devices throughout waterways in Hyderabad, Pakistan, in places chosen to cover issues like industrial runoff, river flow, and canals. They also have a focus on testing water that is used for drinking water.

These devices have internet connectivity and can be remotely monitored.

The NGO will be charged with observing and using the data collected by the monitors to raise awareness of climate change and the levels of pollution in the city. The team has hopes that this will encourage other cities in Pakistan to do the same, and the state of the environment nationwide can be monitored and awareness can be raised.

This project was made possible by $5,086.00 in funding from the Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS), an EPICS in IEEE partner.
