The panela producers’ association AGROROSARIO in Aguacatal, Yarumal, Colombia, faces significant challenges due to unreliable electricity and limited access to sustainable energy, affecting panela production and the livelihoods of local farming families.

Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas IEEE Student Branch is developing a smart hydroelectric microgrid powered by a 3 kW Pelton turbine to provide reliable, renewable energy for the community sugar mill, nearby homes, and public lighting. The project also incorporates IoT monitoring and community training to support long-term operation, local capacity building, and a resilient energy future.

This project was made possible by $8,550 in funding from the Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), an EPICS in IEEE partner.
