In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, residents are benefitting through greater awareness of air quality issues thanks to a sensor network developed by students from Drexel University, local high schools, and the Clean Air Council.

In Bangalore, India, visually-impaired students are learning on personal computers and preparing to be contributing members of society thanks to software programs tailored to their keen sense of touch.

Both these projects are examples the many initiatives that EPICS in IEEE routinely supports each year… From developing air-quality sensors in South Philadelphia to investigate asthma incidence to providing telephone service to a rural community in Zambia, EPICS in IEEE supports engineers and engineering students worldwide in their efforts to provide vital technological support for people in their communities.

Adapted from a successful university model, EPICS in IEEE has created a strong, vibrant spirit of service among a generation of socially responsive engineers. Teams of engineering faculty, NGO staff, and university and high school students work together to provide real-world technology solutions that improve the quality of life in their own environments.

EPICS in IEEE makes a profound impact – not just on the people whose lives have been enriched, but also on the young engineers who are highly engaged and actively participate. University students acquire project management, negotiation and other critical skills for career success while high school students build knowledge and self-confidence, as well as receive an exciting introduction to a technology career. One third of all EPICS in IEEE participants are girls and young women, making the program a vital recruiting tool for STEM-oriented professions.

EPICS in IEEE, a signature program of the IEEE Foundation, is making significant progress, but more help is needed if EPICS is to experience substantive growth. EPICS in IEEE serves communities while also encouraging the global talent pool. To make the program self-sustaining, we are seeking a significant and ongoing level of investment The goal to support twenty (20) new projects a year for the next five years is ambitious, yet feasible.
