Engineering is a field that has often been considered male-dominated. However, organizations such as IEEE’s Women in Engineering (WIE) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) are striving for parity and gender equality in the workplace for female engineers and STEM-oriented positions.

While female engineers have achieved great feats in the past 20 years, there is still an imbalance in the number of female engineers actively in the workplace. According to the 2018 Research Flyer and report by SWE (shown in the image below), while there was a 54% increase in Bachelor’s degrees awarded in engineering and computer science from 200 to 2016, only 30% of women who earn engineering degrees are still working in engineering 20 years later.

Research from SWE outlining the trends in engineering careers for women

IEEE’s WIE is committed to supporting women beginning in education and throughout their professional lives, and is helping take strides towards equality for all in STEM and tech oriented workplaces. Check out their Facebook page here.
