Taxi-cabs were once considered to be the ideal means of transportation if you were in a highly populated city. But with the emergence of ride-sharing apps, the taxi industry has shown a decline over the past few years.
Uber, Lyft, and various ride-sharing apps provide users accessibility and a convenient means to navigate through the city. With a few taps on their smartphone one can arrange a ride to take them anywhere in the city regardless of the distance. As of March 2018 ride-sharing apps were considered to be 65% bigger than Taxis in New York City. Many people find it easier to schedule a ride through Uber or Lyft instead of finding a Cab Company that they consider to be sufficient.
Both Uber and Lyft have also created job opportunities for those that are unemployed or looking for another employment opportunity to go alongside a full-time job. Working for different ride-sharing services gives one the chance to be their boss, and they can choose their schedule as well deciding whenever they want to go out and do a route. Additionally, Uber makes transactions more convenient for the user as their billing information is stored into the app. After each ride, the fare is automatically charged to your credit card so one does not need to worry about having enough cash.
Some that maintain both Taxi and Limousine companies feel that they are at a disadvantage compared to ride-sharing apps. This is because Taxi and Limousine companies are required to pay fees to the county and undergo mandatory drug testing. Uber does require a background check but it uses a third-party app called Hirease to do so. This app does not make use of any government databases and it does not require fingerprints either.
Ride-Sharing Apps have disrupted the taxi industry because they combine modern technology with affordable prices.
