Managing and tracking one’s food intake can be the difference between life and death for a person with diabetes. But could an app make diabetes and obesity management easier?

The EPICS in IEEE Columbus Section at Ohio University created a photo food dietary app where uses took a picture of their meals, tagged the details, and received live feedback on their meal’s healthiness from their caregivers and friends. The app also provided monthly overviews of progress, connected to online databases that outline nutrition content and caloric amount, and allowed users to record notes identifying how and where the meal was prepared and consumed.

The app was a collaborative project, including students and faculty from Alexander High School and medical professionals who actively used the app and provided feedback to the Ohio University team. Ultimately, the team hopes to create a finalized app that helps make picking healthier life choices easier, collaborative, and digital.
